Passages in Landscape

Passages in LandscapeA selection of works from The Holmes à Court Collection

01 March - 08 April 2001

The traditions of landscape painting in Australia have moved from a position of nationalistic pride to contemporary experiences of place and space. Passages (actual or in metaphor) that lead the viewer through the picture plane are a device that bridge the various periods of the Australian landscape genre.

This theme is examined in the works of such artists as Russell DRYSDALE, Arthur ESAM, Chris FITZALLEN, Sali HERMAN, Mandy MARTIN, Sidney NOLAN, John OLSEN, Lloyd REES, Tom ROBERTS, Arthur STREETON, Howard TAYLOR, Fred WILLIAMS and Walter WITHERS.
