When an exhibition unexpectedly slid out from under us a few weeks ago it created an opportunity to accommodate an expression of interest from Richard Woldendorp. This was to have a selling exhibition of his most recent work during the period Abstract Earth is showing at the Art Gallery of Western Australia. Richard is the first WA photographer to have had an exhibition of this magnitude showing at multiple venues around Australia. We were really happy to help to celebrate and support his extraordinary work and pleased to be able to exhibit a small selection of the work of young photographer Hugh Brown at the same time. These two are a couple of engaging characters who enjoy a jovial, quasi ‘master and apprentice’ type relationship, bouncing off each other, sharing ideas, expeditions and the odd glass of red.

Dutch–born Richard Woldendorp is one of Australia’s best-known landscape photographers and is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of Western Australia. This selling exhibition at Holmes à Court Gallery runs in parallel to the exhibition of his aerial photography showing at the Art Gallery of WA 1 August to 8 November. Our exhibition features work taken over the last two years, a large section of which depicts seasonal flooding.

Since 1998 Hugh Brown’s photography has become his livelihood and his window to adventure. He has a longstanding love affair with the Kimberley and Pilbara and more recently has travelled to Africa, Papua New Guinea and Queensland. His view from above, mainly from helicopter height, is becoming more focused and refined as he attempts to capture a deeper sense of the essence of Australia.

Woldendorp has referred to the exposed Australian land surfaces as the “skin of the land”. This exhibition presents an opportunity to share these views of this “skin” from two different vantage points not normally available to us. You will catch your breath in wonder at the view.
