Lesley Meaney’s artistic process is an unconscious, lateral and wandering exploration. Her starting point in recent years is usually something in nature. This residency opens with an exhibition of work already realised. In this case the artist’s shell collection was the trigger.
In her own words: Some of the works do more than simply celebrate shells wondrous and diverse shapes and patterns. The paintings, in their final assembly, reveal other explorations. A shell can represent a home, a container; can be used as currency; can form a hiding place or protection from the elements; can even be a projectile. A shell can be fragile or robust, and can serve as a reminder of a past existence, such as a digger’s helmet or a preserved animal’s skin. I am exploring our visage, the face we give the world.
Lesley has exhibited extensively since 1984 and more recently over the last fifteen years with Gunyulgup Gallery Yallingup and Perth Galleries North Fremantle. She is represented in many collections, both public and private, in Australia and overseas and works mainly with acrylic and gesso on board or canvas.
During the residency we will have the opportunity of watching her process unfold and reveal, as she takes up her brush mid-stream in the exploration of two new series of work. There will be opportunity for conversation and enquiry with Lesley on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and the chance to socialise and talk art with the artist and interested others at one of the four Sunday lunches. We welcome enquiries from secondary and tertiary student groups for tutorials with this experienced and versatile artist, designer and teacher.
