Clyde McGill : Artist in Residence

Gallery
Address
11 Brown Street, East Perth WA 6004
Start Date
29 March, 2007
End Date
20 May, 2007

Holmes à Court Gallery is moving into an exciting period where we will be engaging in a variety of projects outside our previous focus of the Holmes à Court Collection. One of the most exciting proposals for us this year will be having printmaker and performance artist, Clyde McGill, in residence at the Gallery for just under two months.

McGill is an engaging personality, a veterinarian who moved into visual arts. An emerging artist, last year he won the 2006 Libris Award (National Artist’s Book Award) with a work examining his response to the burning of Indonesian fishing boats by customs agents. In his own words he lies to “mix it up” starting with a stimulus and working with one medium eg. video and then taking it off on different tangents into prints, books, objects and performance. Not an easy man to pin down!

Janet Holmes à Court, with McGill, will open an exhibition of his work and launch the residency on Thursday 29 March.

We’re setting up a studio space in the middle of the Gallery and McGill will be working there throughout the residency. Visitors will be able to come in and talk with him about his practice and other art matters of interest. The work on exhibit will change over the eight-week period.

There will also be two free public talks. A couple of weeks into the residency on Sunday 15 April, McGill will discuss where he’s heading with the making of the work. On the last day of the residency, Sunday 20 May, he’ll reflect on the overall experience of being at the gallery and working in this way.

Four “invitation only” Sunday lunches with the artist in the gallery will be held on 22 & 29 April and 6 & 13 May. With a different starting point for each lunch it’s hoped our guests will engage in some stimulating conversation and wide-ranging debate about art matters.

Work will be for sale.
