The Holmes à Court Gallery and Gallery Gondwana present recent paintings by Dorothy Napangardi and her daughter Julie Nangala Robinson, exhibiting in Western Australia for the first time.
Dorothy Napangardi is a prolific Warlpiri artist with an extraordinarily diverse talent and passion for painting. Since winning the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award in 2001, and her major solo exhibition “Dancing up Country” in 2003 at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Dorothy has continued to expand on her view of her country, Mina Mina, and its related Karnta-kurlangu Jukurrpa (Women’s Dreaming).
In this exhibition, Dorothy continues to explore themes and styles and her most recent paintings in this show push her stylistic interpretation of grid designs in new ways.
Her daughter, Julie Nangala Robinson, was born in 1973 and is one of five daughters. She paints Pirlinyanu, a water Dreaming site (Ngapa Jukurrpa) near Mina Mina, for which she is traditional custodian. Julie has been painting since the late 1990’s, often in the company of her mother. In the last three years, she has started to paint on a regular basis and has exhibited in numerous group shows.
Like her mother, Julie paints graphically minimal and contemporary designs of her country Pirlinyanu, a land of rocky outcrops and deep water springs. She has moved beyond traditional iconography and created her own visual language, making her an exciting and innovative artist to watch.

Dorothy Napangardi will be in Perth for the opening of the exhibition on Friday 22nd October, 6 – 8pm, along with Lotte Waters and Roslyn Premont Lali from Gallery Gondwana Australia who will be available for interview.
