An exhibition of works by Angela Brennan, Yvonne Kendall, Wilma Tobacco, Savandhary Vongpoothorn

Perth art collectors have responded strongly to Four, the latest exhibition from the holmes à court Gallery in partnership with Niagara Galleries in Melbourne.

On show and proving popular with Western Australian collectors are Angela Brennan, Savandhary Vongpoorthorn, Yvonne Kendall and Wilma Tobacco.

These four women artists are amongst Australia’s most highly collectable.  Rarely do Perth art collectors have the opportunity to purchase such stunning contemporary works.

With two weeks to go and many of the works on display already purchased, this is a unique opportunity for visitors to view the works before they are returned to Melbourne or delivered to their new owners.

In addition to Four, the gallery is also featuring works by artists Aida Tomescu and Helen Wright.

Working primarily with issues of the feminine, Wright’s prints are a sumptuous exploration of creativity and delicate toughness.

Tomescu’s work draws strongly from her European heritage, producing richly layered paintings and textured calligraphic prints.

Also testifying to the strength of collecting in Western Australia, the latest acquisition by the Holmes à Court Collection is also on display. Catch the moment 1 (2003) by Calier Makigawa reflects the strong interest held by the collection in the development of artists and their practice.

Originally from WA and now one of Australia’s most important contemporary jewellers, Makigawa’s practice has turned to the scale and fluidity of sculpture in recent years whilst retaining the surface finishes and techniques of her earlier craft.

Described by the West Australian’s Robert Cook as “entertaining in its playfulness”, these works offer not only a valuable opportunity to enjoy some of Australia’s hottest contemporary artists, it’s also a chance to look into the buying patterns and preference currently operating in the Perth contemporary art market.
