In August 2011 we began discussions about a ‘fire’ themed exhibition of works from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection. Some months later, the Margaret River bushfires raged out of control, leaving homes and property destroyed and the community devastated. We took sober and sympathetic note of the community response and reached out in order to share some of the local experience.
The exhibition features more than 30 works from the Janet Holmes à Court Collection with fire as their subject, by artists as diverse as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Arthur Wakefield Bassett. Other artists include – Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri and Arthur Wakefield Bassett. Other artists include – Merrick Belyea, Peter Booth, Robert Campbell, Paul Caporn, Tom Gibbons, John Gollings, Christine Gregory, Jacko Jackamarra, Robert Juniper, Myra Lawson, Djambawa Marawili, Clare McFarlane, Ruby McIntosh. Frank Norton, Lin Onus, Jimmy Pike, Tim Storrier, Maxie Tjampitjinpa, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Henri Van Raalte, Christian Waller, Fred Williams and Joseph Tjangala Zimran.
Alongside these, is an installation of works from the community exhibition at Rifle Butts Reserve, Prevelly, courtesy Mark Heussenstamm, photographs by Kashmir Rouw and Sean Blocksidge, and audio recordings sharing personal recounts of the November 2011 fires.
