John Teschendorff: Echoes of Place is a solo exhibition spanning a decade of practice – 2013-2023 and presenting works from an ongoing project – the History of Ideas. This never before exhibited selection of artworks shows influences of Italo Calvino and Guy Debord’s thesis of invisible cities and concept of the derive. These ideas provide a way into confronting the landscape as a memory, as a formally constructed space where dialogues of disquiet are informed by the reality of the denial of movement. Whilst much is darkly allegorical, there is always colour to be found, encouraging a belief that humanity will survive the calculated horror and depravity of recent conflicts and events.
