Objectillogica – a modern wunderkammer celebrates what is wonderful about private collections, their unusual qualities and lack of hard and fast rules about collecting.
The more bizarre, exotic and fantastic works are uncovered from the hidden corners of the collection. This exhibition welcomes the illogic of collecting and explores that familiar slippage as to how collecting can turn into an obsession and develop a life of its own. It also gives us a chance to reflect on how and why we collect.
Objectillogica echoes past cabinets of curiosities, exploring well-travelled themes of life, death and the discovery of the natural world. Yet it is a distinctively modern Australian cabinet of curiosities, far from the European roots of this tradition.
