Origins in Contemporary Aboriginal Art – Papunya Tula Painters is a focused exhibition developed in response to the major survey Papunya Tula – Genesis and Genius shown at the Art Gallery of New South Wales late 2000.
The Papunya Tula artists played a pivotal role in developing the contemporary art movement of the Western Desert.
The art of Papunya is a major strength of The Holmes à Court Collection, from which the exhibition is drawn, with most first generation painters represented.
Artists include: Kaapa Mbitjana Tjampitjinpa, Yala Yala Gibbs Tungurrayi, Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Pinta Pinta Tjapanangka, Turkey Tolsen Tjupurrula, Willy Tjungurrayi, Maxie Tjampitjinpa, Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, Tim Leura Tjapaltjarri, Mick Namarari Tjapaltjarri, Ronnie Tjampitjinpa, Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri, Uta Uta Tjangala, Tommy Lowry Tjapaltjarri and Timmy Payungka Tjapangati.
